Many automakers create non-functional hood scoops just to add
to the appeal of their cars and cheat customers that the hood
scoops are an indication of the massive power-train hidden
under the hood. However, hood scoops are meant to be functional
features that aid in cooling the engine below. GMC uses
hood scoops as well, but unlike the many non-functional hood
scoops, theirs are functional. This time they have even gone a
step ahead and created an innovative hood scoop for the
upcoming 2017 Chevrolet Silverado HD.
GMC has revealed that the 2017 Chevrolet Silverado HD trucks
will be fitted with their new patented air-intake system. This
system helps cool the engine even during difficult conditions.
The new hood scoop is part of this system and in addition to
making the vehicle look like a muscle car, it helps ensure the
engine stays cool for a better performance.
Engine Specs and improvements
How the new air-intake system works to keep the engine
Before we delve into how the system works, we understand that
the truck will feature the same engine as the outgoing model.
This is a huge disappointment as there were rumors that the
engine would be replaced or modified. The heavy duty truck will
still feature a turbocharged 6.6 L, V-8 diesel engine that is
rated at 397 hp and 765 lb-ft of torque. The engine is mated to
a 6-speed Allison automatic transmission system.
Back to the new air-intake system, the automaker says that just
like humans and other animals, engines too need to breathe and
the new air-intake system helps the Silverado HD breathe
optimally. The hood scoop channels 60% of the air needed to
cool the engine. This air is much cooler than the air under the
In addition, the scoop also offers the ram-air effect where
more air is forced into the engine as the vehicle’s speed
increases. In case the hood gets blocked, air is channeled
through a secondary intake located in one of the model’s front
fenders. However, this is only one side of the new system’s
coin. Since engines like dry and cool air, a good intake system
should ensure that moisture in the air is kept at its minimum.
To help in this, the new intake system also features an
air/water separator which sends air through a 180-degree turn
before it reaches the engine. By doing this, any moisture in
the air consolidates into large droplets. These droplets are
then flung onto the wall of the engine’s housing to drain away
by centrifugal force.
To ensure the system is good under many weather conditions, it
was taken through rigorous testing. According to the automaker,
its engineers simulated all possible types of precipitation.
The truck was also tested in different temperatures to gauge
its performance in extreme heat and cold environments.
The automaker even tested the truck at the Eisenhower Tunnel
which is the highest vehicle tunnel in the globe. This tunnel
also has the highest elevations in North America. This was done
to ensure the trucks provide maximum utility to customers even
in extreme environments and situations.
2017 Chevrolet Silverado HD Exterior
Other than the new functional hood scoop, other exterior
features are carried over from the outgoing model. Though only
scarce information is available as of this writing, we
understand that the Silverado HD features a cheese-grater
grille which is flanked by projector beam headlights and LED
Even on the sides, everything looks unchanged including the
chromed towing mirrors, chrome-plated huge wheels and the side
steps which are also finished in chrome. More information will
be availed by the automaker later.
2017 Chevrolet Silverado HD Interior
GMC has not released any information about the upcoming
Silverado HD interior as of this writing. However, I have a
strong feeling that the cabin will remain largely unchanged
compared to the outgoing model.
The automaker is only likely to modernize the current features
and probably add more connectivity and safety technologies. The
current model had undergone significant changes in the cabin;
so many changes are not expected.
Price and release date
The price of the 2017 Silverado is also a mystery as of now.
However, due to the innovative hood scoop, I expect the model
to be slightly expensive than the outgoing model. The trucks
will be delivered to dealerships this fall.
When it hits the streets, the 2017 Chevrolet Silverado HD will
compete with the likes of Ram 2500, Nissan
Titan XD and the Ford
F-250 Super Duty.
